When thermal performance, electrical isolation, and mechanical durability all matter, Sil-Pad® A1500 stands out as a reliable, field-proven thermal interface material. Designed for high-pressure clamping environments, A1500 is widely used in power electronics, automotive systems, and industrial controls where consistency and durability are critical.
What Is Sil-Pad® A1500?
Sil-Pad® A1500 is a silicone-based, thermally conductive, electrically insulating elastomer reinforced with fiberglass. The elastomeric compound is coated on both sides of the reinforcement layer, creating a mechanically robust interface that resists cut-through while maintaining stable thermal performance under load.
This construction makes A1500 particularly well-suited for applications involving mechanical fastening, repeated assembly, or uneven mating surfaces.
Thermal Performance Under Pressure
One of the defining strengths of Sil-Pad® A1500 is its performance under increasing clamping pressure. At 50 psi, the material delivers a thermal impedance of just 0.42 °C-in²/W, and performance continues to improve as pressure increases.
In TO-220 style applications, thermal resistance drops significantly as pressure rises, making A1500 an excellent choice for bolted or clipped power devices where consistent pressure can be applied.
With a thermal conductivity of 2.0 W/m-K, Sil-Pad® A1500 strikes a practical balance between heat transfer and compliance, helping reduce overall interfacial thermal resistance.
Electrical Isolation You Can Rely On
Beyond thermal performance, Sil-Pad® A1500 provides robust electrical insulation. It offers a dielectric breakdown voltage of 6,000 VAC, high volume resistivity, and a UL 94 V-0 flame rating.
These characteristics make it well-suited for designs where electrical safety, regulatory compliance, and long-term reliability are essential.
Mechanical Strength and Durability
Sil-Pad® A1500 is engineered for real-world assembly conditions. With a Shore A hardness of 80 and fiberglass reinforcement, it resists tearing and cut-through during handling and installation.
It also supports a wide operating temperature range, with continuous use ratings from -60 °C to 180 °C, making it suitable for both cold-start and high-temperature environments.
Common Applications
Sil-Pad® A1500 is commonly used in:
-
Motor controls
-
Automotive electronics
-
Power semiconductors
These are applications where mechanical fastening, electrical isolation, and predictable thermal performance must all work together.
Available Formats and Converting Options
Sil-Pad® A1500 is available in sheet form, roll form, and precision die-cut parts, with optional pressure-sensitive adhesive. This flexibility allows easy integration into both prototype builds and high-volume production.
Nomenclature:
SPA1500-0.010-00-1212(no PSA)
SPA1500-0.010-AC-1212(PSA backing) -used for adhesive application.
Die-cut configurations can reduce assembly time, improve placement accuracy, and support complex or tight-tolerance designs.
When to Choose Sil-Pad® A1500
Sil-Pad® A1500 is a strong choice when your application demands:
-
Stable thermal performance under higher clamping pressures
-
Reliable electrical isolation without fragile films
-
Resistance to cut-through and handling damage
-
A proven, production-ready thermal interface material
It may not be the softest or highest-conductivity pad available, but it excels where durability, pressure performance, and repeatability matter most.
Note: Sil-Pad TSP A2000 and Sil-Pad A2000 ARE TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS. Sil-Pad A2000 is now known as SIL PAD TSP A3000. These two materials are often confused.
