At NEDC, we cut a number of thermal pads. Through all the thermal pads we sell- we see a large amount of diversity in their make-up. Most thinner thermal pads utilize fiberglass reinforcement. However, there is an alternative such as polyimide that offers great dielectric strength.
Why choose a Polyimide Film Reinforcement over a Fiberglass Reinforcement?
There would be two reasons to choose a thermal pad that has a polyimide/Kapton reinforcement over a fiberglass counterpart.
Reason A: The dielectric strength is better. When prioritizing higher dielectric strength, or higher voltages as a requirement in the thermal application- picking a material with polyimide reinforcement is a good idea.
Reason B: Cut through strength is superior. Polyimide film are a continuous layer in the material. These materials have better resistance to being pierced by sharp objects that may be present during installation of the material into the thermal application.
The below presents the availability of the thermal pads with polyimide film reinforcement. There is 0.9 W/m-K to 1.3 W/m-K available. In addition, they are available with adhesive backing(PSA) for ease of installation into the application.

Applications where Polyimide Film Reinforced Thermal Pads are Used
NEDC die-cuts, or otherwise converts these materials into finished thermal pads for customers. As a thermal pad manufacturer, we also die-cut the standard Sil-Pad Configurations out of these thermal pads.
