Gaskets are everywhere. I wanted to post a blog that discusses gaskets in everyday life. I recently bought a car, and thought I could discuss several places where I found gaskets during routine maintenance.
Applications of Gaskets
Oil Plug- On the oil plug, there is a plastic gasket that goes around the bolt so that no oil escapes. One of the considerations when designing this gasket was probably oil resistance. This gasket was also designed with an ability to be compressed so it can seal against any oil leakage.
Softtop- On the softtop, there is a very soft gasket along with some vinyl fabric that goes all the way around the softtop. This gasket forces all the water from the rain into the rain well that sends the water out through tubes in the rocker panels.
Door Gaskets- There are door gaskets on the inside of the car that simply adhere to where the door and the interior upholstery so that no water leaks into the car.
Hood Gasket- There is a hood gasket that prevents dust, and other contaminants from entering the engine bay. Since my car is older than I am, I will need to buy another one of these to reseat this, since the old gasket is slowly degrading, and it was so brittle, I broke it while I was removing part of the fender, and the bumper.
Cover Valve Gasket- this one is probably the most important one I’ve encountered so far. My cover valve gasket on this 30 year old engine is leaking oil all over the place, and it needs to be fixed this weekend so I can drive it around. It isn’t surprising that this gasket has leaked at all tho. It will be an interesting learning experience to remove, and replace this. $20 bucks well spent.
More Information on Gaskets
For clarity, NEDC largely manufactures gaskets for very specialty custom cars, not usually consumer stuff, but I thought it would be a fun blog to talk about all the gaskets that are in the car after about 5 hours of poking around it.
