GPU memory — whether GDDR6, GDDR6X, or HBM — generates significant heat during operation. Modern GDDR6X modules on high-end GPUs can draw 10-15 watts per module, and memory temperatures directly affect GPU performance, stability, and lifespan. Despite this, VRAM thermal management is often overlooked in favor of GPU core cooling.

GPU Memory Thermal Pads VRAM Cooling Guide - image 1

This guide covers why GPU memory thermal pads matter, which pad specs to use for different memory types, and when replacement is worth the effort.

Why GPU Memory Cooling Matters

GPU memory modules sit on the PCB surrounding the GPU core. They handle the data pipeline — textures, frame buffers, AI model weights — and they run at high clock speeds. As memory speeds have increased (GDDR6 at 14-16 Gbps, GDDR6X at 19-21 Gbps), thermal output has risen proportionally.

When VRAM overheats:

  • Memory throttling — the GPU reduces memory clock speeds to protect the modules, reducing bandwidth and performance
  • Artifacts and crashes — thermal instability in memory causes visual artifacts, driver crashes, and system freezes
  • Reduced lifespan — sustained high temperatures accelerate electromigration in memory chips, shortening their operational life

For a deeper look at why memory chip cooling matters, see our post on memory chips, heat, and thermal pads.

Thermal Pad Thickness for GPU Memory

The thickness of the thermal pad needed for VRAM depends on the gap between the memory chip and the heatsink:

  • 0.5 mm — standard for GDDR6/GDDR6X modules with tight heatsink clearance
  • 1.0 mm — common on cards with slightly larger memory-to-heatsink gaps
  • 1.5 mm — used on some cards where the memory sits lower relative to the core
  • 2.0 mm — occasionally needed on cards with significant height variation

For a comprehensive thickness selection guide, see our GPU thermal pad thickness guide.

The correct thickness is critical for VRAM pads specifically because memory modules are typically shorter than the GPU core. If the VRAM pad is too thick, it lifts the heatsink off the GPU core. If too thin, the VRAM has no thermal contact at all.

Recommended Materials for GPU Memory Thermal Pads

For Standard GDDR6/GDDR6X Modules

Mid-range conductivity pads (3-6 W/mK) are typically sufficient for standard commercial GPU memory:

tgp 1300, GP1500S30 die-cut

  • Bergquist Gap Pad 1500 (1.5 W/mK) — entry-level, for low-power memory
  • THERM-A-GAP 579 (3.5 W/mK) — versatile, good all-around pad
  • T-Global TG-A3500 (6.5 W/mK) — higher performance option

For High-Performance Memory (GDDR6X at High Clocks, HBM2E)

Higher conductivity is recommended for memory running at maximum speeds:

  • T-Work7000 (7 W/mK) — ultra-soft for good contact
  • T-Work8000 (8 W/mK) — high compression for power electronics
  • THERM-A-GAP PAD 80 (8.3 W/mK) — high-performance gap filler

For HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) Stacks

HBM memory stacks sit directly on the GPU package and have different thermal requirements. These are typically managed by the GPU manufacturer’s integrated cooling solution, but for custom cooling designs, high-conductivity pads (10+ W/mK) are recommended.

Does Replacing GPU Memory Thermal Pads Improve Performance?

For most stock GPUs, the factory VRAM thermal pads are adequate for standard operating conditions. Replacement provides the most benefit when:

  1. The factory pads are low-quality — some budget GPUs use very low-conductivity pads
  2. The GPU is used for sustained high loads — AI training, rendering, mining
  3. A custom cooler is being installed — aftermarket coolers may need different pad thicknesses
  4. Temperatures are already high — if VRAM is throttling, better pads can help

Typical improvement from upgrading VRAM thermal pads: 5-10°C reduction in memory temperature, which can prevent throttling and extend module life.

VRAM Thermal Pad Installation Notes

When installing thermal pads on GPU memory modules:

  1. Clean the memory chip surface with isopropyl alcohol
  2. Cut the pad to cover the entire chip surface with 1-2 mm overhang
  3. Remove the liner and place the pad on the chip
  4. Ensure the pad is flat — wrinkles or folds create air gaps
  5. Do not stack pads unless absolutely necessary (see our guide on stacking thermal pads)
