MIL-DTL-83528F (Revision F), formerly MIL-G-83528 (issued in 1987), is a military detail specification that lists out different materials that are used as conductive gaskets and for other sealing applications. This military specification is active, meaning that it can be used to procure materials. There are several different types of material under this specification, mostly composed of silicone and fluorosilicone with conductive metals/particles to provide electronic/ radio frequency shielding. NEDC is able to provide all of the elastomers in standard and custom thicknesses, greater than .020” except for Type E, J, and H. All material properties are tested in accordance with (IAW) the specifications outlined in MIL-DTL-83528. NEDC is certified/qualified by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to sell all of the materials listed below.
CE-001 is silicone based, copper filled elastomer that is capable of delivering shielding effectiveness up to 110dB at 10 GHz. This can be useful in applications requiring a wide temperature range with a silicone elastomer. The specific gravity for CE-001 is 3.5, one of the higher specific gravities. The silver based copper is what contributes to this elastomers higher specific gravity. CE-001 can be used in solutions where the application demands silicones excellent properties along with the shielding effectiveness of the silver plated copper. CE-001 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type A. CE-001 has a temperature range of -55 to 125C. CE-001 can be supplied as sheet stock, extruded cord stock, O-rings, die cuts, strips and custom waterjet cuts, such as ladder gaskets.
CE-002 is silicone based product with silver-plated aluminum particles that are dispersed within the silicone matrix. This type is able to deliver a shielding effectiveness of 100dB of plane wave at 10 GHz. This material can operate at an impressive -55 to 125C temperature range. The lower specific gravity of the silver aluminum contributes to Type B’s naturally lower overall specific gravity. CE-002 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type B. CE-002 comes typically in tan, but can also be provided in blue. CE-002 can be provided in die-cuts, sheet stock, extruded cord stock, O-rings, and many custom forms of waterjet cuts such as connector gaskets, and ladder gaskets.
CE-003 is silicone elastomer with silver plated glass particles dispersed throughout the silicone. The shielding effectiveness of this material is impressive with 100dB plane wave at 10GHz. This material can be useful in applications that require an elastomer that is electrically conductive but doesn’t have a high specific gravity. The specific gravity of this compound is 1.9. The durometer of this elastomer is also the lowest out of NEDC’s material certified to the MIL-DTL-83528F. CE-003 is qualified to MIL-DTL-83528F, Type M. This elastomer imparts the wide temperature range of silicone as well, with an impressive -55C to +160C. CE-003 is provided in the color tan. CE-003 is provided in the forms of sheet stock, extruded cord stock, die cuts, molded parts, strips, and high precision waterjet cuts.
CE-006 is a fluorosilicone based elastomer that has a silver-aluminum filler. This material provides 90dB of plane wave shielding at an impressive 10GHz. This elastomer is also useful in applications requiring the wide temperature range of fluorosilicone. The temperature range of this elastomer is -55C to 160C. This elastomer is useful in applications requiring fluid resistance. CE-006 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type D. CE-006 is typically provided in tan, but can also be supplied in blue. CE-006 can be provided in sheet stock, extruded cord, stock, strips, die cuts, O-rings, and waterjet cuts such as ladder gaskets.
CE-012 is a silicone elastomer with silver plated copper dispersed within the silicone matrix. This material has a very high durometer of 85 Shore A. This material maintains an impressive shielding effectiveness of 110dB of plane wave at 10GHz. This material can operate in an environment with a temperature range of -45C to 125C. This material is able to provide an elastomer that is more difficult to compress while providing a rubber that is very effective at shielding with a volume resistivity of .005 ohm-cm. CE-012 has a fairly high specific gravity of 3.5. Its silver plated copper imparts this quality to the elastomer because of silver coppers high specific gravity. CE-012 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type K. CE-012 is provided in the color tan. CE-012 can be provided in sheet stock, die cuts, molded parts, strips, extruded cord stock, and waterjet cuts such as ladder gaskets.
CE-017 is fluorosilicone based elastomer that carries silver plated copper particles, providing incredible shielding effectiveness of 100dB at 10 GHz. This material can operate at a temperature range of -55C to 125C. The great advantage about Type C, is it can provide the great properties of fluorosilicone while also delivering the electrical conductivity of silver plated copper particles. This elastomer is great for resistance to jet fuels and other solvents. This elastomer has a slightly higher specific gravity than the previous two of 3.75. CE-017 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type C. CE-017 comes in the color tan. CE-017 can be provided in extruded cord stock, sheet stock, die cuts, O-rings, strips, and waterjet cuts such as connector gaskets and ladder gaskets.
CE-022 is a silicone elastomer with silver plated nickel dispersed within the silicone matrix. The shielding effectiveness of this material is as high as 100dB plane wave at 10GHz. The temperature range is also quite impressive operating from -55C to +125C. The silicone polymer imparts this wide temperature range. CE-022 is used in applications where a silicone polymer would be beneficial to the application but also requires the high electrical conductivity of an elastomer such as CE-022. CE-022 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type L. CE-022 can be provided as sheet stock, O-rings, extruded cord stock, die cuts, connector gaskets, and high precision waterjet cuts.
CE-023 is a fluorosilicone elastomer with pure silver dispersed in its matrix. This material has a very high electrical conductivity. The volume resistivity of this material is extremely low at a incredible .002 ohm-cm. This material is electrically conductive while providing the tough properties of fluorosilicone. This elastomer is capable of providing an impressive 110dB of plane wave at 10GHz. The wide temperature range of fluorosilicone is of obvious use here, with an operating range of -65C to 160C. CE-023 is qualified to MIL-DTL-83528F, Type F. The specific gravity of this material is the highest yet with a large 4.0 +/- .25. CE-023 is supplied as tan. CE-023 can be supplied as extruded cord stock, sheet stock, strips, die cuts, O-rings, and waterjet cuts.
CE-025 is a silver-plated copper-filled silicone, with an expanded copper foil. This material is capable of providing shielding effectiveness at 110dB of plane wave at 10 GHz. The impressive temperature range of this material is -45 to 125C. CE-025 is qualified to the MIL-DTL-83528F, Type G.
The MIL-DTL-83528F (Revision F) requires many test methods to ensure that the elastomers are as tough as they claim to be; so they can serve the industries that they protect. Below is a list of test methods and the properties that they test for.
- ASTM D2240-Durometer: Tests the durometer of the elastomer. For example, this test ensures Type K maintains its incredible hardness.
- ASTM D1329-Low Temperature: Tests the elastomer for its elasticity under very low temperature conditions. For example, this tests ensures Type D’s incredible low temperature rating of -55C.
- ASTM D991-Volume Resistivity of Electrically Conductive and Antistatic Products: Tests the elastomer for its resistivity to ensure that Type F maintains is astoundingly low .002 ohm-cm resistivity.
- ASTM D624-Tear Strength: Tests the elastomers toughness and resistance to tear. For example, this test also compliments Type K’s incredible resistance to tear.
- ASTM D395-Compression Set: Tests the elastomers ability to be compressed. For example, this test highlights CE-006’s low compression of 30.
- ASTM D412-Tensile Strength: Tests the elastomers ability to resist a force trying to tear it apart.
- ASTM D792-Specific Gravity: Tests the elastomers specific gravity. For example, this test highlights Type M’s incredibly low specific gravity.
- ASTM D471- Effect of Liquids: Tests the elastomers in the face of aggressive solvents. For example, this test highlights Type C’s incredible resistance to solvents.
