enclosure with circuit board, app for Eccosorb LS
When engineers need a lightweight, flexible microwave absorber that delivers consistent lossy performance, Eccosorb™ LS is one of the most widely used absorber families available. Built from carbon-loaded polyurethane foam, Eccosorb LS provides strong insertion-loss performance, repeatable electrical characteristics, and easy integration into RF and microwave assemblies.
Although the material is not weatherproof by default, it can be supplied with protective coatings for environments involving moisture, fuels, lubricants, or hydraulic fluids. At NEDC, we routinely die-cut, kiss-cut, laminate, and supply PSA-backed Eccosorb LS parts for customers requiring clean, ready-to-install absorber geometries. In fact, sometimes we even install Eccosorb LS for our customers. As a Qnity (formerly Laird/DuPont) converter, we commonly have access to these materials, and even sometimes stock them.
Understanding the LS Series
Eccosorb LS materials obtain their high-loss behavior through carbon dispersion, creating a lightweight but electrically conductive foam absorber. The series includes multiple tuned grades—LS-14 through LS-30—each offering progressively higher attenuation.
A key detail:
The LS designation corresponds to the material thickness. As the LS number increases, both thickness and insertion-loss capability increase.
This makes grade selection intuitive—choose the LS number that aligns with the desired loss performance and available space inside the assembly.
Below is the performance table commonly used by design engineers when selecting the correct LS grade
Typical Applications
Eccosorb LS is used across a range of commercial, industrial, and defense RF environments. Common applications include:
• Lowering Cavity Q
Ideal for RF amplifiers, oscillators, test boxes, LNB housings, and microwave device enclosures. By damping internal reflections, LS stabilizes system behavior and eliminates unwanted resonances.
• Antenna Isolation
Placed between antennas, or within enclosures to increase insertion loss and prevent cross-coupling.
• Surface-Current Suppression
Applied to ground planes or metallic surfaces to reduce stray currents and improve overall radiation patterns.
• Reflectivity Reduction
LS absorbers can decrease reflectivity of metal or non-metal objects when applied in one or more layers.
