At NEDC, we would be remiss to not mention most of our products revolve around silicone-based materials. As a result, products that we offer a lot of die-cut silicone products. Out of our 5 core products, 4 are normally silicone based. In this post, we picked out 4 of our core products, with some examples on each of how silicone is tied in.
Most of the time, thermal pads are silicone-based. They are usually filled with thermally conductive fillers. These soft-complaint pads have a large amount of demand because of the ever increasing use of electronics. Many of these electronics require pads to dissipate heat. However, there are non-silicone options available. Nevertheless, below are two silicone-based options of thermal pads.
Gap Pad VO aka GAP PAD TGP 800VO
Gap Pad VO is a conformable gap filling material. This material comes in .020-.250” in thickness. It is available with a tape backing, designated by “AC.” Its topped with an electrically isolating Sil-Pad on one side. It features strong thermal performance with a 0.8 W/m-K, and low thermal impedance. Typically its used between PC Boards and heat sinks.
Sil-Pad K-4 aka SIL PAD TSP K900
Sil-Pad® K-4 is a thermally conductive thin pad. The construction is silicone rubber with a polyimide carrier. It offers low thermal impedance and high thermal conductivity of 0.9 w/m-k. It comes in a standard of .006” +/- .001” thick. The color of this material is a refined gray.
A fair amount of our gasketing materials use silicone rubber. Everything from silicone foam rubber, to solid silicone rubber sheeting is used for gasketing materials. Two of the materials below are some commonly known silicone based gasketing materials. These gasketing materials are typically what people think of when they think of die-cut silicone products.
Saint Gobain F12 Silicone Foam
F12 Silicone Foam is a soft cellular silicone foam material that is fire retardant(UL94VO) and has low toxic gas emissions. It has an excellent compression set. It is often used as a gasketing material for high-performance, low compression pressure applications such as trains, and aerospace. It comes in a few colors with the standard color being gray. Lastly, the thicknesses available range from .063” to 1” in thickness.
Saint Gobain COHRlastic 9030/9040/9050/9060/9070
These products are calendered cured silicone sheeting. The numbers have “90” indiciate the durometers are these materials. For example, 9030 is 30 Shore A durometer. They are available 1/32” to 1/8” in thickness. They can be certified to A-A-59588 Class 2A/2B. In addition, 9040, 9050, 9060, and 9070 meet the respective AMS-3301, 3302, 3303, and 3304. The standard color of these materials is rusty-red. They are manufactured by Saint Gobain, and are frequently used as gasketing materials.
Gap Pad® 3000S30 aka GAP PAD TGP 3000
Gap Pad® 3000S30 is a thermal gap filling material. It is a silicone material with a fiberglass carrier reinforcement. This thermal pad has great thermal conductivity along with great electrical isolation. It is a part of the S-Class of thermal pads, being incredibly soft and compliant. It comes in a light-blue and has natural tack on both sides.
Thermacool® R10404 Thermally Conductive Gap Filler
Thermacool® R10404 Thermally Conductive Silicone Sponge is a thermally conductive silicone-sponge gap filler. It is also electrically isolating with a dielectric strength of 100 volts per ASTM D149. Typical applications include lithium ion battery packs and computers. It comes in thicknesses ranging from 1/32” to 1/4” in thickness. Because of its soft-nature it conforms to irregularities in topologies. The standard color of this material is a light green.
Eccosorb® GDS is a broadband thin flexible absorber material that utilizes a silicone rubber. It features a frequency range of 6 GHz and above. It is low outgassing, making it perfect for space applications.
Eccosorb® FGM-40 is a thin, magnetically loaded absorber. It is broadband, featuring a frequency range of 4-18 GHz. It is available in color gray, and is also available with tape on one side for ease of application.
NEDC typically die-cuts all of the materials mentioned above. However, since NEDC also employs laser-cutting, and waterjet cutting, sometimes the application may be better suited for those cutting methods.
