5590H thermal interface pad

5590H thermal interface pad

At NEDC, we cut thermal pads on a frequent basis. Customers come all the time, asking for a thermal interface pad for their special electronic, phone this, defense system that. With all of these commercial electronics, and military applications, you need a reliable, and cost effective pad you can depend on.

What is a Thermal Pad?

A thermal interface pad goes on top of, or between a hot electronic. Its been said that for every 10°C rise in the temperature of an electronic, the life of it halves. For this reason, thermal interface pads used. Another fact, or reason that thermal pads work so well is its also assumed, the most perfectly flat surface only makes 10% contact with another perfectly flat surface. All those spaces yield some pretty bad results when it comes to heat transmission. These soft pads fill in the nocks, and crannies of the irregular surfaces.

For 3M, I would cut- no pun intended- 3M Thermal Pads into two groups. The first group would be silicone thermal pads, and the second would be acrylic thermal pads. All of these pads mentioned are “Gap Pads” meaning they are placed in an application and use the weight of the application to provide pressure normally. In addition, these pads are normally a bit thicker.

3M Thermal Pad Selection

Silicone Thermal Pads – all filled with Ceramic to impart thermal conductivity

3M Pad 5514 – color gray, 1.6 W/m-K

3M Pad 5549S – color gray, 3.5 W/m-K with film

3M Pad 5516 – color gray, color gray, 3.1 W/m-K

3M Pad 5515S – color light gray, with yellow, 2.7 W/m-K

3M Pad 5586 – color black, 1.6 W/m-K

3M Pad 5591 – color white, 1 W/m-K

3M Pad 5516S – color gray, 3.1 W/m-K

3M Pad 5583S – color white, 1 W/m-K

3M Pad 5584 – color white, 1.1 W/m-K

3M Pad 5595S – color gray, 1.6 W/m-K

A lot of customers are suspicious of silicone in their applications, because it may oil bleed, or outgas. Bonding can become a nightmare in the presence of silicone- for this reason 3M offers acrylic thermal pads as well.

Acrylic Thermal Pads

3M Pad 5570N- color white w/ gray dots, 1.3 W/m-K

3M Pad 5571N- color yellowish/white, 2.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5571- color yellowish/white, 2.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5589H- color white/light gray, 2.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5590H- color white/light gray, 3.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5567H- color white/light gray, 3.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5578H- color white/light gray, 3.5 W/m-K

3M Pad 5500H- color white/light gray, 3.0 W/m-K

3M Pad 5510H- color white/light gray, 2.0 W/m-K

What does the “S” stand for at the back of the numbers?

It indicates a permanent PEN(polyethylene naphthalate) film. This film is added to aid in handling, and making the thermal pad easier to rework. In addition, it gives in puncture resistance, and more durability.  It is not to be removed.

Applications that may include 3M Thermal Pads

-Sensors

-LED Displays

-Electric Vehicles

-Test and measurement/measuring devices

-Satellite navigation equipment

Each one of these pads comes in a variety of thicknesses to accommodate different compression ratios/different apertures. NEDC is an authorized 3M converter, for this reason we have access to all of the thermally conductive interface pads 3M offers. NEDC die-cuts, and waterjet cuts thermal pads into custom shapes.
